Overland and Expedition Definitions

Posted by Colorado Ron

Overlanding, expeditions, offroading, and outbacking are some of the terms that are often used to explain different trips people make. So often these words are used incorrectly. I too am guilty of misusing these words. Scott Brady, with contributions from Douglas Hackney, Jonathan Hanson, Graham Jackson and Sinuhe Xavier have written an article that totally explains all these definitions.

Backcountry Adventure: A one-day, or multi-day off-highway trip in an adventure motorcycle or 4wd.

Overland(ing): Vehicle-supported, self-reliant adventure travel, typically on remote, secondary or unimproved roads or tracks.

Vehicle-Dependent Expedition: An organized, vehicle-dependent journey with a defined purpose, often geographic or scientific in nature.

Expedition Vehicle: A 4wd or adventure motorcycle prepared for self-reliant travel over long distances, through unpredictable weather and over variable terrain.

ExPo: An abbreviation of the website Expedition Portal.

Notes: The term “off-roading” has fallen out of use because it implies that the driver/rider is traveling off of an established road, i.e. cross-country.

Wake up Honda!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Colorado Ron

I'd like to talk about Honda for a moment. Their dual sport model for the US is what?? A Honda XR650L . Really? That's it? When BMW has the new 800GS and Kawasaki with its completely redesigned KLR, I feel Honda is missing the boat. What in the world are they thinking? The Honda XL700V Transalp is laying rubber all over Europe. These are VERY capable bikes as the video shows. So Honda, if you are listening, SELL IT IN THE U.S. ALREADY!!!

Overland Journey: Iceland

Our latest video, Overland Journey: Iceland, is now launched! You can go here to watch it online! This is a dual sport ride across Iceland in 2008 with a good friend Jon Hulme. 100% of all the profits are being donated to RiderDown Foundation. This is a great organization that helps injured riders with expenses. They are a great foundation and Im glad to be supporting them.

Big Springs, Missouri

Posted by Colorado Ron

On a recent trip with my wife, we found ourselves in southern Missouri. The is the heart of the Ozarks with lots of lakes, rivers, and natural springs. One of the coolest springs we found was Big Springs. What an amazing place! Out of the way, few people, and well taken care of! If you're ever in the area, this is a must see! It flows anywhere from 140-854MILLION gallons of water a DAY! Amazing!

Cheap Overland Tip

Posted by Colorado Ron

I am guilty of often looking for Overland Journeys that will take me to far away places. This is not always needed, and definatly not necessary in order to have a great trip. As I sit here looking over Google Earth I see that there are places to Overland in every state. There are National Parks, National Landmarks, miles of dirt roads, small towns, lakes, rivers, and so on. EVERY state has them. In this time with people mentioning a struggling economy, I just want to remind everyone not to forget Overlanding in your own back yard!

Now go find something amazing!

Cheap trailer build.

Posted by Colorado Ron

I always wanted to build a cheap trailer and had the opportunity today! The scouts need a trailer to haul their camping gear, so I donated the trailer. Another leader found the shell and we built the rack from a twin bed frame! Now that's what I call a budget build.

Very nice custom bed

When Jeep Mods go bad!

Posted by Colorado Ron

This has to be the single most rediculous jeep mod I have seen. You can't use it as a step because its too slick when wet. You can't use it as a slider because the bottom isnt smooth. I'm really not sure what the purpose is, buts its goofy looking for sure!

First Jaguar seen in Central America since 1900

Posted by Colorado Ron

Alright! For all you Overlanders out there, watch where you leave your granola bars while camping in Mexico!

The largest cat in the Americas is alive and well in the heart of Mexico, scientists say.

Three photographs of a male jaguar and exactly 132 poop samples (including the one above, released February 10) are the first known evidence of the predator since the early 1900s.
